Company

A Chandler Ltd, a free range egg producer from Riddlesworth, near Diss, is home to a 16,000 layer unit producing free range eggs that are distributed nationally.

OVERVIEW

The customer approached us looking for a solution that would enable them to weigh their feed silos accurately, so that they could monitor usage and re-order more efficiently with the added bonus of cross checking the quantity of feed delivered. The solution needed to be stand alone with minimal maintenance required.

APPROACH

For this particular solution, we needed to ensure that the measurement results were accurate to the nearest 5kg but also the components were IP69K rated. Despite being an extremely clean & fastidiously kept site, downtime from water ingress was not a situation that could be tolerated. The two feed silos, which can each hold up to 18,000kg worth of feed, are located outside on a concrete pad and are each held up by 4 steel legs. After taking into account environmental factors along with the dimensions and weight, we implemented a solution consisting of an alloy steel mount with a Flintec Q50 loadcell under each corner of the structure with a thick bracing plate welded to the leg and bolted to the pad.

The reason we chose these particular loadcells is because of their IP69K rating, meaning they would be protected against environmental factors as well as their "pancake" design, which meant there was no change in height to the silo and therefore had no impact on the augers feeding from the silos.

The loadcells are then summated in a stainless junction box on the side of the silo's structure, connecting to two Baykon BX24 weight indicators (one per each silo). There is the future possibility of an SMS alert system or a remote online monitoring system, should this prove useful.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

"As a result of the system being implemented, we are able to monitor feed per hen allowing us to see the correlation between egg weight and spot any potential stressors affecting the birds.

I have a better relationship with the feed supplier because of the ability to plan further ahead so I don't need to order at the last minute or worry about running out of feed.

From start to finish, AWM was transparent about the project and was always there to answer any questions. The solution they put in place does exactly what I need it to do and I've had no problems with it. Thank you AWM."
