Maintaining weighing scales in a food factory

November 17, 2022

A high-quality weighing solution is critical to maintaining a high-quality food product. Having highly accurate scales can help food manufacturers stay productive, profitable and competitive. However, all weighing equipment will suffer different levels of deterioration depending on the environment in which they are used. It's important to ensure your equipment is both suitable for the site it's located in and also that the correct washdown and maintenance procedures are carried out. Some of these steps include:

Calibration

To eliminate inaccuracies and false weighing results, your scales need to be properly weight checked and calibrated at the appropriate intervals. When choosing a new scale for your factory, it's also important to understand the calibration process, some manufacturers make the calibration process more difficult than others, but a professional weighing service company will be able to advise and provide maintenance and calibrate service for nearly all types and models of weighing scales.

How often should your scale calibration be checked?

There is no fixed requirement for how often you should have your weighing scale checked and calibrated, this depends on many factors including how often the scale is used, the conditions it is used in and how critical the accuracy of the scale is to your process. The standard calibration interval for general low risk weighing is every 12 months, but each individual company must undertake a risk assessment to help decide what calibration check interval is suitable for their business.

Thorough cleaning

Every factory has a different manufacturing process, handles different food and carries out a different washdown procedure. No matter the environment or foods you're handling, ensuring a thorough washdown procedure is carried out will help the longevity of your weighing scales. If they're not properly cleaned and maintained, parts of the weighing system are likely to be compromised.

Understanding the environment

Once installed and operational, you'll need to take the required steps to maintain your weighing system. To reduce the risk of breakages such as rust, cracks and loadcell malfunction, you should take into account environmental factors such as draft, temperature and moisture.

Depending on the type of food you're manufacturing, factors such as temperature and moisture levels will vary, understanding how these factors will affect your weighing system is important. When choosing your weighing solution, you need to ensure the products are suitable for your factory, for instance, the correct IP rating needs to be selected and the construction needs to consist of the correct materials such as high grade stainless steel.

Stainless steel loadcells

Loadcells are an integral part of any weighing scale, faulty or inadequate loadcells will lead to inaccurate weighing results which will have a huge impact on your operations. Choosing the right type of loadcell is also extremely important, this is one of many parts of building the ultimate weighing solution that we will work on for you. Stainless steel loadcells are a must in food processing facilities, mainly for the fact that they can withstand the harsh washdown environment.

Stainless steel platform scales

As well as stainless steel loadcells, we offer stainless steel platform scales. Available in a range of styles, sizes and capacities, stainless steel platform scales are easy to clean as well as resistant to moisture and corrosive materials that may be used during your factory washdown. For this reason, we highly recommend them in most food manufacturing environments.

Waterproof indicators

Going back to the importance of your equipment being designed to withstand the environment it's being used in, it's important that your weight indicators are also able to deter ingress from moisture and chemicals. Since your factory operatives are going to be touching your weight indicators, it's just as important that these can be cleaned aswell as the actual scale itself.

We can provide a range of different waterproof weight indicators, look here.

Calibration

As we touched upon earlier, the correct calibration schedule is a crucial part of maintaining your weighing equipment. With every solution we provide, we will advise you on the calibration intervals that will need to be carried out, this will not only depend on the products used but also the environment they're being used in. Talk to a member of our team to discuss calibration on any of your current or future weighing systems.
